In order to truly you become the best version of yourself, you must focus on balancing each of the main aspects of life. While they may not all have equal importance to you it is vital that they all be addressed and accounted for.
Some things to do when facing the daunting and broad task of figuring out how to better yourself as a person first ask yourself a few key questions:
- Who are you?
- Who do you want to be?
- What are your priorities/goals?
- Where do you see yourself in the next 6 months? Year? 5 years? 10 years?
Now let’s get a little more specific:
Health and Fitness
-8 hours of sleep per night
Sleep is extremely important. It is your body’s time to rest and recharge physically and psychologically through sleeps various cycles.
-avoid processed foods
A healthy diet ensures that your body is getting the natural nutrients it needs. Processed foods contain chemicals that humans weren’t designed to digest especially in excess. The majority of fast food is processed.
-Drink lots of water
Hydrate or die-drate! Water keeps your body hydrated and energized. (Fun fact: your body is 60% water)
-practice safe sex
College is a crucial time and having a baby can really fuck that up. Make sure you’re taking precautions when having sex. Whether it be condoms or other forms of contraception (the pill, iuds, implants, the ring, etc.), make sure you’re taking the right precautions.
“Safe sex is great sex, better wear a latex, because you don’t want that LATE text, that ‘I think I’m late text’”
-visit doctor(s) regularly
Every 6 months be sure to check in with your personal doctor for a full check-up.
Exercise has tons of benefits other than making you look good! To name a few it improves your daily energy, keeps your muscles active, maintains heart health, and decreases stress. No matter what state you are in you can always start small and work your way up! Keep in mind that you should work all parts of your body. Try and rotate between cardio, lifting, etc. Don’t forget to stretch and manage your breathing.
-seek counseling if you need it
There are plenty of resources out there for counseling, online and in person. All college campuses have resources available be sure to be aware of them. There is no harm in seeking counseling! In fact, it is an extremely smart decision that will help you immensely in the long run.
-take time to check in and meditate
-learn something new every day engage your mind
-enhance your interests
Regardless of the type of relationship, be sure it is a healthy one. There are several resources out there to help you if there is a situation in which you feel unsafe, threatened, uncomfortable, disrespected, abused, etc. Don’t let anyone dull your sparkle!
Self-reliance is very important because at the end of the day the one person who is ALWAYS there for you is you. Before you can build strong relationships with others, focus on yourself.
Friends, family, peers, teachers and other people in your life truly want you to succeed and do your best. Know that you have plenty resources for support and that you are never alone! Many adults have been through whatever situation you may be in and can offer great advice or guidance. Odds are someone else is struggling with the same issue as you read this article! Take the time to recognize who is in your support circle.
You don’t need another person’s validation to make you happy, but if you decide to test the waters or be in a serious committed relationship, communication is key. Make sure you and your significant other have agreed upon common terms for the relationship and most of all make sure that no matter what you each respect one another.
It is important for young adults to form healthy relationships and develop a strong social network. Having people to rely on and talk to relieves stress. Social networking opens doors of opportunity regardless of one’s major.
College is a difficult time in most people’s lives because you must decide to pursue a career which you will likely work for the rest of your life.
