Looking for challenge? Here are some competitions that will allow you to learn some new things and expand your skills in STEM, while also provide the opportunity to make a quick buck. Every year there are thousands of engineering competitions designed to inspire middle schoolers and high schoolers to push themselves and come up with creative solutions to the problems all around us. We know you are full of big ideas, so we wanted to give you all the information you need to get involved. Now let’s find some inspirations to put all those talents and skills together to come up with the next big solution. Below is a short-compiled list of some popular competitions that fight to bring about equality as you fight for first prize.
Competition 1: Project CS girls
Project CS Girls is a non-profit organization that was founded to inspire girls around the world to explore their interests and futures in computing fields. The Project CS Girls competition is designed for middle school girls to apply their computer science skill towards solving an important social problem facing us today. This problem however is up to you the only restriction is that it must fall under one of the following themes; Global health, A safe Worlds, Intelligent Technologies, or Bridging Inequalities.
This is the perfect competition to finally show off the hours you have put into learning how to code. You get to form a team of two or three and analyze some of societies problems. This requires all your creativity. Once you and your friend(s) have an idea, you can then push each other to develop a solution. Your work in this competition will be rewarding, as it will provide you with hours of fun and positive working experience. Your final solution may also be used on are larger scale to benefit a community, nation or the world.
How to Participate:
The first step to getting involved is to go to this website: https://www.projectcsgirls.com. This will provide you with more information about the competition and what other competitors have done in the past. Then, after you have found your idea and your teammates, you can fill out the application form here. The due date for 2018 is March 1 and the project due date is April 15. Then the next step is to wait for the judges to put you in the finalists and invite you to the national gala. Good Luck!
Competition 2: Engineer girl
The Engineering Girl Essay competition is an annual contest that provides you with a prompt that challenges you to think about how something in the world can be improved. For example, the most recent prompt was:
“Write a plea to your city or county council that makes the case for an infrastructure improvement and gives details of your suggested solution.”
The contest often opens in the fall and announces the winners early in the summer of the next year. Unlike some of the other competitions of this variety, this one does not require technical skill. You don’t have to be a master coder or builder to win. This contest just asks you to provide a new, constructive, and interesting perspective on the world. How to Participate:
The first step to getting involved in this engineering competition is to go to the website in the fall and find the prompt. Use this to inspire your creativity and come up with your idea. From this you can look into the specific requirements for your age group. Once you have written your essay you can submit it online and wait until they have completed the judging process. Good Luck!
Competition 3: Technovation
Technovation, like the other competition, pushes you to identify a problem in your community and envision solutions. As part of the experience you will join a team that develops an app and attempts to sell it in a global marketplace to help solve the identified problem. You will learn to work together with your team and essentially create a start-up. Many aspects of this competition push the teams to operate like a new business. For example, in the senior division, the teams are asked to write business proposals for their app. Additionally, the teams are asked to pitch their completed app to judges in a similar fashion to how one may pitch to a venture capitalist. Now I know this must sound totally awesome.
How to Participate:
The website provides many resources to help you get started on your project. This includes an infographic with a recommended timeline and a frequently asked questions and answers. Once you are ready to register your team find your age category, go to here, and fill out the form by March 7, 2018. The infographic is then useful for determining when certain aspects of the project should be completed as well as making sure you are completing all the aspects required. You then get to submit video pitches and show off your new creation. Push your coding skills to the max. Good Luck!
No matter what you are interested in, it is important that challenge yourself to create new things and use your creative side to improve the world around you. Find the competition that is best suited for you or participate in multiple.
