Step 1: Decide if you are the kind of person who would like coding
Do you like math? Do you like puzzles? Do you see patterns in every-day life? Coding is all about algorithms and patterns! Even if you aren’t into these things you can get into coding, but you will definitely enjoy the process a lot more if you have fun with what you do.
Step 2: Pick a language!
There is a myriad of programming languages to choose from! If you are looking at a position at a certain company you may want to check what language they code in, but if you are just getting started as a hobby one of these four languages is a great place to start!
Step 3: Find a tutorial!
CodeAcademy, Khan Academy, and Lynda are great tutorial sites! Khan Academy and Lynda have video and written tutorials, while CodeAcademy has exercises you complete step by step. I personally have used and enjoyed CodeAcademy. CodeAcademy and KhanAcademy are free (with extra features and programs accessible if you pay for them), but Lynda has a 30 day free trial before paying a monthly fee.
Step 4: Get Coding!
No matter how many tutorials you follow or books you read on the subject, the best way to get better at coding is practice. You’ve got all the tools you need to succeed right there in your lap, in your mind, and at your fingertips–you just need to search for them and hone your skill!
