About our lab

Our lab is located in the G.W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA.

Our research isĀ focused on three topics:

  • the mechanics of the mammalian ear
  • the mechanics and design of mechanical metamaterials and composite materials
  • nonlinear dynamics of bistable beams

Using computational and analytical modeling techniques, the goals of our research in hearing mechanics are the improvement of our understanding of the normal biomechanics of the mammalian ear and of the diagnostic tools for hearing loss.

The objective of our research on mechanical metamaterials and composite materials is to design materials that have properties that do not exist in nature. For example, we are trying to develop materials that achieve simultaneously a stiffness similar to steel and with a damping capacity similar to a lossy elastomer.

Our research is interdisciplinary and involves many different aspects and methods of mechanical engineering:

  • computational mechanics (finite element methods)
  • nonlinear dynamics and vibrations
  • structural acoustics
  • biomechanics and biophysics
  • structural optimization
  • signal processing
