Registration for Seniors

Senior-level ChBE Labs

Due to space limitations in the labs we have a maximum capacity which cannot be exceeded. To ensure that students get the classes needed for graduation, enrollment is prioritized for the lab based on graduation date. It is important if you need to be prioritized for a section that you have completed the online Application for Graduation. http://www.registrar.gatech.edu/students/deginfo/oag.php This confirms your intent to graduate during a specific semester.

If there are circumstances which impact your scheduling which are not apparent to your advisor, you must share this information so advisors can work with you to find resolutions.

Unit Operations

All CHBE students are required to take either CHBE 4200 Unit Operations Lab or CHBE 4210 Bio-unit Operations Lab. Unit Operations Lab is offered in fall, spring and summer semesters.

When you register for this lab, if a given section is full, you should either find a different section with seats or add yourself to the waitlist for your preferred section. You should NOT register for a section which you would be unable to attend or waitlist on a day which would not work with your schedule. Advisors cannot move you into a different section or add you to a section. We can only prioritize students who are on a waitlist. Please note you will waitlist for the lab section only; when a seat in the lab opens, you will be able to register for both the lab AND lecture at that time.

Process Control

All CHBE students are required to take CHBE 4411 Process Control lecture and CHBE 4412 Process Control Lab. The 4411 lecture is offered during the fall and spring semesters only.  The 4412 lab is offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters.

Please note that the lecture can be taken prior to the lab or concurrently with the lab. We cannot guarantee students will get the lab in the same term as the lecture unless it is the graduation term.

CHBE electives

A variety of CHBE electives are offered every fall and spring semester. CHBE electives are not offered during the summer semester (except for one during the London study abroad program.) A list of the approved CHBE electives is distributed every spring to all undergraduates. Students on the Standard option are required to take two CHBE electives; students on the Biotechnology concentration are required to take one CHBE elective. Some electives that are related to biotechnology will give priority registration to students following the biotechnology concentration.

Because there are several to choose from, we do not have wait lists for CHBE electives. If you are unsure which CHBE elective to take a discussion with your faculty mentor may help with the decision. We do not recommend registering for more electives than you need as this prevents others from gaining access and inflates the anticipated enrollment unnecessarily.

APPH 1040 or APPH 1050

We advise seniors to take their health requirement, APPH 1040 or APPH 1050, PRIOR to the last semester. There are frequently scheduling conflicts which occur between CHBE 4520/CHBE 4530 Capstone Project and this health class.

For a student who experiences such a conflict, the options to resolve are either 1) enrollment through cross-registration in the wellness class at an affiliated ARCHE school; 2) enrollment as a transient student in the wellness class at another school accompanied by a petition to the faculty for a waiver of the 36-hour transfer credit rule (not encouraged or guaranteed); or 3) delaying graduation by a semester.

Summer Graduation

When a student completes degree requirements in the summer term, s/he should apply for graduation for the summer. Students who graduate in the summer are invited to participate in the fall semester commencement ceremonies. Summer graduates have the option of submitting a petition to participate in the spring commencement as long as their gpa is 2.0 or greater and they are taking no more than six credit hours in the summer. Details are available at http://www.commencement.gatech.edu/students/summer-graduates

For students who are planning to complete the senior design capstone project during the summer term, we recommend taking no more than six credit hours. The typical schedule for summer would include:

  • CHBE 4520/4530 Capstone Project (2 hrs),
  • CHBE 4515 Safety (1 hr)
  • CHBE 4200/4210 Unit Operations Lab (3 hrs.)

For a student who has not completed PC lab, another option would be:

  • CHBE 4520/4530 Capstone Project (2 hrs),
  • CHBE4412 PC Lab (1 hr)
  • CHBE 4200/4210 Unit Operations Lab (3 hrs.)
