Readmission

Out Two or More Consecutive Terms

A student who for any reason has remained out of school for two or more consecutive terms, must apply for readmission.

Catalog Year

Students are readmitted under the current catalog that is in effect at the time of readmission. If a student wishes to follow the degree requirements from a catalog in effect prior to the term of readmission, he/she must make a request to the Major School. There is no guarantee that such a request will be granted and readmitted students should be prepared to follow the current degree requirements as outlined in the current catalog. Readmitted students should also be aware of the 10-year rule (www.catalog.gatech.edu/rules/13c.php).

Application Deadlines

  • Spring – December 1st
  • Summer – April 1st
  • Fall – July 1st

The readmission process requires all applicants to complete the application, submit a payment of $30.00 via the READMISSION APPLICATION web site link below, and forward the application form to the readmission office. All supporting information such as transcripts from other schools attended, petitions, etc must be included with the application form. Academically Dismissed

A student who has been academically dismissed once for unsatisfactory grades must remain out of school for at least one term. The student must also submit a completed readmission application, petition to the faculty, and readmission contract. Students should contact an advisor in the major to which they want to apply to create the readmission contact before submitting the contract to the Registrar’s Office. If a student is required to attend another school as a condition of readmission to Georgia Tech, he/she should be aware that in no case will credit be allowed (except by examination) for courses repeated at another institution that have previously been taken at Georgia Tech. A STUDENT WHO HAS BEEN ACADEMICALLY DISMISSED A SECOND TIME FOR UNSATISFACTORY GRADES WILL NOT BE READMITTED. See Rules and Regulations VIIIB6

The School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology has a very rigorous readmission process. Please note that students dropped twice from Georgia Tech will not be considered for readmission under any circumstances.

Wait Period: Georgia tech and CHBE require students to sit out at least one complete academic semester before attempting to reapply.

Readmission: Being dropped from the University for academic performance is a very serious situation, and one from which the majority of students applying for readmission are denied. Through your readmissions application and interview we attempt to discern if you are a viable candidate for readmission. We only readmit students who are willing to be aggressive about their education and overcome the obstacles that stood in the way of performing well in the past.

Step One: The Readmission Application

Personal Assessment: As part of your readmission application, you must complete a personal assessment. Through this personal assessment you should analyze the reasons or the behaviors that caused you to be dropped as well as the reasons you should be readmitted. The personal assessment includes a list of questions that will help you analyze your situation and determine if you are ready to return to Georgia Tech. The personal assessment should show how committed you are to succeeding through the care you take in writing it. If your assessment fails to thoroughly address the questions, your application will be denied. Proofread your assessment carefully. Grammatical errors and typographical errors will count against you when the committee reads your assessment.

Course List: Prepare a typed list of courses that you would like to take if you are readmitted to Georgia Tech. Because you may not get into all the courses you want, include some alternative courses. Indicate on your list how many credits you think you should take, given the time commitments you expect to have.

Time Schedule: Fill out the semester time schedule worksheet of this package to provide a written schedule that displays clearly how your time will be allocated during the semester you return (if readmitted). Using your list of ideal courses mentioned in the previous paragraph, account specifically for class time, study time, work (if applicable), sleep, commute time if significant, and other activities in which you will be involved regularly.

Optional Supporting Documentation: Students are encouraged, but not required, to submit any additional documentation that will strengthen their readmission application. Examples would be letters of recommendation from employers and professors since dismissal from Tech or other people who have worked closely with you. Your references may e-mail their recommendation letters to ami.ivanecky@chbe.gatech.edu   using your name in the subject heading, and including the capacity in which they have worked with you as well as reasons they think you should be readmitted in the body of the letter.

The readmission documents above should be submitted to the CHBE school along with a Petition to the Faculty form requesting readmission and specifying the term in which you hope to return to resume classes.

Step Two: Internal Review by CHBE

The documents you submit will be reviewed by an academic review committee to determine your readiness to return.  At this time, you may be invited to a readmission interview to further assess your current status and future plans.  If the committee lacks confidence in your potential for success, you will be advised that the school will not support your readmission application or petition.

Step Three:  Academic Contract

If the committee feels you are ready to return, an academic contract will be discussed and agreed upon between the student and academic advisor(s).  The contract will outline the courses to be completed and necessary gpa each term.  The contract may also include other requirements, such as attending tutoring sessions or visiting the counseling center.  The contract will be signed by the student and department advisor.

Step Four: Petition to the Faculty packet

The department will sign the Petition to the Faculty form with its recommendation and return it to you to submit to the registrar’s office.  You need to submit the following to the registrar’s office by their deadline.

  • Petition to the Faculty form (signed by the department)
  • All supporting documentation (the readmission packet submitted to the department should be part of this.  You may also want to include any pertinent doctor’s letters or other documents.  See the following link for further details:  http://www.registrar.gatech.edu/docs/pdf/petitions-guidelines.pdf
  • Readmission academic contract (signed by the department)
  • Readmission application from the registrar’s office (submitted online)

The deadline for the CHBE application is 15 days prior to the deadline for the Institute:

  • Spring – CHBE: September 15                     GT: October 1st
  • Summer – CHBE: January 15                       GT: February 1st
  • Fall –CHBE: May 15                                       GT:  June 1st
