In preparation for the start of the Fall 2016 semester, the PWP administration team is rolling out some changes to enhance security, usability, and flexibility of our end users and their fantastic websites.
VPN/On-Campus Access for Admin
Starting on August 15th 2016, all PWP websites will require an on-campus connection through the VPN service for any admin user off campus.
Users administering their website on campus will see no change.
We realize this means site administrators will require the extra step of connecting to the VPN, but the frequency of successful WordPress exploits and site defacements convinces us that restricting administrative access is a necessary step.
GT Header & Footer on Custom Themes
Throughout the Fall semester, PWP will migrate all GT header and footer implementations in themes other than GT Boilerplate to an opt-in plugin. This means that the GT header and footer will be removed from each website and available for re-enabling via the site Customizer.
Due to some scope changes to a proposed web requirements policy for campus, it is not appropriate at this time to automatically enable this feature for all PWP websites.
There are a number of projects that are continuing their slow and steady progress to reality, including a PWP Mercury plugin, a GT Theme v3.0, and more.
More information about these initiatives will be announced as the project nears completion.
